The Controversial Shift. Coming off the success of Ascendancy , Trivium baffled fans by dropping almost all screaming in favor of a "Bay Area Thrash" approach. Heafy’s vocals drew heavy comparisons to Metallica’s James Hetfield. At the time, critics called it derivative. In hindsight, it is a collection of incredibly tight, fast thrash songs that proved they could play with the big boys.

Trivium has maintained a consistent release schedule since their debut, primarily through Roadrunner Records .
The comeback. Trivium hired drummer Alex Bent, a technical wizard with a background in death metal (Battlecross, Decrepit Birth). Suddenly, the band was alive again. Matt Heafy integrated his new clean singing technique with his old screams (which he relearned safely). Trivium's early work was characterized by a raw, youthful energy and a strong focus on melodic metalcore. Their debut album, , showcased promise, but it was their second album, "Ascendancy" (2005) , that gained them attention in the metalcore scene. Singles like "Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis" and "Dying in Your Arms" demonstrated the band's ability to craft catchy, aggressive riffs and emotive vocals.
