( starstruck ) Whoa, a saber-toothed tiger! I've always wanted to meet one.

Set during the Pleistocene ice age around 20,000 years ago, the story follows a herd of prehistoric animals migrating south to escape the advancing glaciers. Sid (John Leguizamo), a clumsy and talkative ground sloth, is accidentally left behind by his family and must set out alone. He soon encounters a surly woolly mammoth named Manfred (Ray Romano), who reluctantly saves Sid from a pair of angry brontotheres. "Hey, I'm watching him, I'm watching him

Diego appears and offers to help, secretly planning to lead the pair into an ambush. As the unlikely herd travels through dangerous ice caves and encounters prehistoric creatures, the trio begins to bond. Manny, haunted by a past where his own family was killed by humans, becomes deeply attached to the baby. Diego, too, has a change of heart after Manny saves his life from a lava flow. He confesses the ambush plot and helps Sid and Manny concoct a scheme to outwit the saber-toothed pack.

Because I’m not like the others. I’ve seen too much killing. Let me help you return the baby. It’s the right thing.

Sid: "Come on, Manny. It'll be fun!"
